So they took the oath. 6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night, neither eating bread nor drinking water, for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles. 7 And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem, 8 and that if anyone did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles. 9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain. 10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have broken faith and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel. 11 Now then make confession to the Lord, the God of your fathers and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives.” 12 Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, “It is so; we must do as you have said. 13 But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a task for one day or for two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter. 14 Let our officials stand for the whole assembly. Let all in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every city, until the fierce wrath of our God over this matter is turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them. 16 Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men, heads of fathers’ houses, according to their fathers’ houses, each of them designated by name. Derek Thomas writes:
There were offenders at every level: seventeen priests, six Levites, one singer, three gatekeepers, and eighty-three or eighty-four laity. The fact that priests were involved, including relatives of the high priest, shows how pervasive the sin had become, even if at the end of the period only those found guilty made up less than half a percent of the total male population that had initially returned under the decree of Cyrus. Some of the priests descended from Jeshua, colluder with Zerubbabel shortly after the return under Cyrus. A ram was offered as a guilt offering (Ezra 10:19).
One might argue that such a number, just over a hundred men in thirty thousand, is so small as to be of no importance. But that would be to reason in a way that the Scriptures do not. The stories of Achan in the Old Testament and Ananias and Sapphira in the New Testament are reminders to us of how the sin of a few can have serious consequences in the life of the community. John Donne’s line “No man is an island” was never more true than in the Christian church. Our sins can brings others to a standstill, debilitating to their spiritual power and influence. “A little leaven leavens the whole lump” (1 Cor. 5:6; Gal. 5:9).

Would you not be angry with us until you consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape? 15 O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this.”
Andrew Steinmann writes:
Israel had been warned by Moses and the prophets of the dangers of marrying the heathen peoples of the land, who would entice God’s people to abandon him. This theme underlies all the discussion of intermarriage in Ezra. Deuteronomy 7 plays an especially important role in the discussion (compare Deut 7:3 and Ezra 9:2). However, other passages from the Pentateuch and some from the prophets are also important. Ezra’s contemporaries were concerned exogamy leading to corruption of “the holy seed” (Ezra 9:2). This terminology recalls Lev 19:19; Deut 22:9-11; and especially Is 6:13, with its messianic overtones. The mixing of the holy seed of Israel with pagan elements that would draw the Israelites away from Yahweh and his promises threatened not only to make Israel run afoul of the First Commandment, but also threatened the Gospel hope that the promise of the holy seed would be fulfilled in the incarnation of the Messiah from the lineage of Israel according to his flesh (see Rom 9:3-8; Gal 3:5-29).
Intermarriage was no doubt attractive, especially to the upper classes (cf. Ezra 9:2). A good number of these marriages may have been arranged to enhance the political and economic status of prominent Judea families through association with leading families among the other peoples of Palestine. This of course led to reliance on worldly wealth, influence, and power, instead of on God, and it placed a premium on temporal well-being instead of seeking eternal benefits from the gracious and merciful God of Israel.

At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. 12 So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your earnestness for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. 13 Therefore we are comforted. John Calvin writes:
Paul seems to make repentance the ground of salvation. Were it so, it would follow, that we are justified by works. I answer, that we must observe what Paul here treats of, for he is not inquiring as to the ground of salvation, but simply commending repentance from the fruit which it produces, he says that it is like a way by which we arrive at salvation. Nor is it without good reason; for Christ calls us by way of free favour, but it is to repentance. (Matt. 9:13.) God by way of free favour pardons our sins, but only when we renounce them. Nay more, God accomplishes in us at one and the same time two things: being renewed by repentance, we are delivered from the bondage of our sins; and, being justified by faith, we are delivered also from the curse of our sins. They are, therefore, inseparable fruits of grace, and, in consequence of their invariable connection, repentance may with fitness and propriety be represented as an introduction to salvation, but in this way of speaking of it, it is represented as an effect rather than as a cause. These are not refinements for the purpose of evasion, but a true and simple solution, for, while Scripture teaches us that we never obtain forgiveness of sins without repentance, it represents at the same time, in a variety of passages, the mercy of God alone as the ground of our obtaining it.

John Calvin writes:
Not in the strength of the horse, &c. After the Psalmist has shown that there is proof of the divine goodness in every part of the world, he takes particular notice that men have no strength but what is given them from above, and this he adds with the express purpose of checking the pride by which almost all men are inflamed, and which leads them to trust in their own strength. The meaning of the passage is, that let man come in the preparation of his own strength, and with all the assistances that seem to him most prevalent, this will only issue in smoke and vanity; nay, that in arrogating the very least to himself, this will only be a hindrance in the way of the mercy of God, by which alone we stand. The strength of the horse is mentioned by synecdoche to denote any kind of protection. Not that God is displeased with those things in themselves considered which he has given us as helps, but it is necessary that we be withdrawn from a false confidence in them, for very commonly when any resource is at hand, we are foolishly intoxicated and lifted up with pride. He opposes the fear of God therefore to the strength both of men and of horses, and places his hope in his mercy, intimating that it is highly incumbent upon us to show our moderation in worshipping God with reverence and holiness, and depending upon his grace. Hence we learn that he only condemns that strength which would take from God the honour due to him.

John Calvin commenting on verse 17 writes:
The fear that is mentioned, stands opposed to heedless security, such as is wont to creep in, when there is a hope of deceiving with impunity. For, as God’s eyes are such that they penetrate into the hidden recesses of the heart, we ought to walk with him carefully and not negligently. He calls the present life a sojourning, not in the sense in which he called the Jews to whom he was writing sojourners, at the beginning of the Epistle, but because all the godly are in this world pilgrims.

Derek Kidner writes:
On this painful note the story of Ezra’s ministry breaks off. It’s appropriate enough. His mission was to apply the law to his people (7:14), and the law brings the knowledge of sin. But a postscript will follow, when Ezra will present the positive and festive aspects of the law: its gift of light to the mind (New 8:8), and its witness to God as liberator and provider (New 8:9-18).
Until that moment, some thirteen years beyond the events of this chapter, Ezra will disappear from the record. Meanwhile further trials will overtake the Jewish settlers, until Nehemiah arrives to transform the scene.
In the Hebrew Bible the book of Nehemiah follows straight on from here, to form the final part of a single story.
